SANCA THUSONG EERSTERUST / MAMELODI / NELMAPIUS ALCOHOL AND DRUG CENTRE

1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

During 1979 the need for a resource system assisting with addressing the growing alcohol and drug abuse problem in Eersterust, was identified by the community of Eersterust

Due to this being identified, 2 community members Mrs. Henrietta Makenna (social worker) and Ms. Deidre Hammonds (PR) linked up with the local Alcohol Anonymous group and started substance abuse related services in Eersterust.
They opened an office at the “Andrew Gordon Shopping Centre” in Eersterust. As soon as they opened the office they also linked up with SANCA (South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence)
As the need grew for larger offices, the local municipality was contacted which lead to SANCA getting a 99 – year lease agreement on the Municipal grounds in Charles Leyds Street.
The community of Eersterust then participated in joint fundraising events in order to build the offices on the grounds, as it is known today. Sponsorship from Sigma-Motors (known today as FORD Motor Company) was also received towards the building project.
On 9 October 1982 the newly built office in Charles Leyds Street was formally opened.

During 1999 SANCA Mamelodi approached the management of SANCA Eersterust regarding an amalgamation with SANCA Eersterust as the Mamelodi branch found it difficult to function alone. During 2000 the amalgamation went through and with it the name of SANCA Eersterust changed to “SANCA Thusong Eersterust Alcohol and Drug Out-patient help centre”.
During 2005 SANCA Thusong also started an intake office in Nelmapius (next to Mamelodi)

SANCA Thusong Eersterust Alcohol and Drug Out-patient help centre, is affiliated from the “South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence”, of which the Head Office is situated in Johannesburg.
During 2008 we have also extended services to the Bronkhorstspruit / Cullinan area.
